We've Got 6 Hours To Plant 5000 Trees and We Need Your Help

Let’s cut to the end, first.  On Saturday, May 7th, our community – working in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation – is going to attempt to do something incredibly big and incredibly difficult.

We are going to plant 5000 trees.  In one day.

Ideally, in about 6 hours.

We’re doing it because, here at Stone, we believe in problem solving and we believe in creating impact and we believe that most global problems are indeed local problems.  We’re doing it because we are profoundly worried about the ways climate change will affect our community and our families and our future.  We’re doing it because we believe this is one thing we can do – certainly not the only thing we can do, not the only thing we must do, but one thing we can do – to make the world a better place.

We’re doing it because we believe trees create positive and meaningful impact – on air quality in Lancaster (which is 27th worst in the country) and on our 1400 miles of streams (nearly half are already polluted).

And we’re doing it because we believe that if we spend a Saturday afternoon getting really dirty, and working really hard (for about six hours), we can make a difference.  For our families and for our friends, for the people we love, for our planet.

So, here’s the ask.  Today, we’re asking anyone who might be interested in helping out to sign this google form right here.  And to be very clear, we aren’t just looking for help on May 7th (though we definitely need help on May 7th!), we also need enthusiastic supporters:

  • Who can connect us to other interested people and organizations;

  • Who might be interested in telling our story;

  • Who love the idea of using an auger to help pre-drill holes for the trees;

  • Who have equipment, experience, and enthusiasm for a really big project;

  • Or, who just want to know more!

Yes, it’s true – we’ve planted 5000 trees before.  In fact, we did it just a year ago – but last year, it took us 53 days to get it done.  This year, we have about 40 days of hard work ahead of us so that we can get it all done in about 6 hours.

And to do that, we need to take an important step forward: we need to know who is willing to help.

So let’s take that step forward now.  Please take 30 seconds to sign this google form right here and let us know you’re excited to help, and we’ll get to work on this enormous – and enormously important – project.

With so much gratitude,

Mike Simpson, Head of School
