Five For Friday, 7/28/23!
Welcome back to 5 For Friday, our…occasional update of things we’ve been doing, thinking about, listening to, working on, and mulling over here at the Stone Independent School:
We’re thinking about this quote from Tony Robbins: “The quality of your life is a direct reflection of the quality of the questions you are asking yourself”. We couldn’t agree more – in fact, every class at Stone begins with and is designed around a “Big Question”. And speaking of great questions and living well, we’re also thinking about the four questions Ezra Klein asks himself to determine whether or not he’s had a good day.
And, we’re…feeling really excited about celebrating failure? We’re big fans of failure here at Stone: we believe that failing well and failing fast leads to great insight and great prototypes and great breakthroughs, and because we do we’re excited to see The Museum of Failure open in Brooklyn. The Museum of Failure says it best: “Failure leads to innovation”. Be sure to fail well this weekend, friend!
And, we’ve watched this Messi free-kick about 42 times in the last week. GOAT warning in full effect!
And. Uhm. We’re…wondering about mustard-flavored Skittles?
And finally, we’re reading and re-reading this wonderful blog post by Stone Spanish language (and sociology, and archeology, and ethnography, and boat-building) instructor Maribel Perez. Love this quote: “By establishing clandestine schools, the people of Khonkho took up the tools of the oppressor to fight for liberation. Education in Khonkho was literally life or death. To borrow a phrase from bell hooks, education in Khonkho was the practice of freedom.”
“Education…was the practice of freedom.” May it always be so.
And/also: we’re getting excited for our second virtual information session (right here!); and we joined threads and started….threading (?); and we’ve re-watched footage of Dean of Students Alex Funnell and physics instructor Erica Bartos’ “meeting” about 7 times now and haven’t yet stopped feeling sweaty and nervous.
These are busy weeks around Stone, as we design and prepare for our next school year filled with complex problem solving, adventure, and wonder. If you are interested in learning more, be sure to email us at admissions@stoneindependent.org to schedule your private tour or shadow day!
